چکیده
This paper examines the indexical function of prosody in the signalling of discourse deixis and anaphora (in particular, contrastive accent versus low pitch and weak stress on certain types of context-bound referring expressions: demonstrative-based as well as 3rd person pronouns – mainly in English). The choice of contrastive versus weak stress on given expression types of this character will be shown to have important effects in terms of the creation of discourse from text and context. These effects vary as a function of the degree of deicticity of the type of indexical expression which is contrastively accented (or not accented, as the case may be): contrastively accented demonstratives may serve to create a discourse referent out of the presupposition of a context utterance (a semantic-pragmatic unit which is normally inaccessible to anaphoric retrieval), while contrastively stressed 3rd person pronouns may make salient an entity which is at the periphery of consciousness (thus accessible but not activated, in Chafe’s, 1994 terminology) at the point of reference. In all cases, an element of semantic contrast is implied, which is a feature of demonstrative expressions generally. As has often been pointed out, high pitch as well as strong stress is semiotically equivalent to a gesture, whose indexical function is clear. The paper characterizes contrastive accents placed on indexical expressions in terms of their “discourse operator” function, that of operating on the discourse context in specific ways in order to make salient a referent which is not so at the point of targeting.

When indexicals target discursively subsidiary information: How foregrounding and backgrounding in discourse affect indexical reference
Adopting Berrendonner’s (1990; fc.) distinction between “micro-syntax” and “macrosyntax”, as well as the orthogonal one between foregrounded and backgrounded discourse segments (cf. Khalil, 2005), this paper aims to examine certain “noncanonical” interactions amongst these domains. In particular, I shall be looking at instances where a potential referent is evoked within a highly presupposed, d...
متن کاملAnnotating Discourse Anaphora
In this paper, we present preliminary work on corpus-based anaphora resolution of discourse deixis in German. Our annotation guidelines provide linguistic tests for locating the antecedent, and for determining the semantic types of both the antecedent and the anaphor. The corpus consists of selected speaker turns from the Europarl corpus.
متن کاملProsody and Discourse Structure: Issues and Experiments
In this report we summarize the approach of examining structural relations between prosody and discourse semantics by means of experimental phonetics.1 We sketch the computational basis of the project, its methodological setting, and we present the results of three experiments on: • the role of local prominence in disambiguation of focal adverbs • the role of relative prominence in anaphora res...

متن کاملDiscourse Deixis and Discourse Processing
Computational approaches to discourse understanding have a two-part goal: (1) identifying those aspects of discourse understanding that require process-based accounts, and (2) characterizing the processes and data structures they involve. To date, in the area of reference, process-based accounts have been developed for reference via anaphoric pronouns and via definite descriptors. In this paper...
